On June 8th 1856, Pitcairners arrived in Norfolk Island to settle. On a rainy and windy day, this was their first step on our island.
From this day on, the 8th June has been awarded Public Holiday and is celebrated every year.
Dressed in traditional period costume, the arrival of the settlers is re-enacted and garlands are laid to remember the original Pitcairners. Celebrations include procession march through the historic ruins at Kingston, family reunions, a grand picnic and traditional sports.
As of today, roughly a third of actual Islanders descend from these early inhabitants.
